Session ONE

Disagreement = Misunderstanding? = Lack of Education.
The Mass is central to Catholicism.
Avoid preconceived notions, Piety v Theology v Faith?
"Liturgy" = The Work of the People ("Work" needs preparation)
The Mass = Jesus is present in the Eucharist. Reenactment of Calvary.
"Biblical Memorial" makes past event into present reality.
"Old Testament the New lies concealed - New testament the old is [unvailed]..
Early Christian Liturgies usually celebrated in people's homes. (No Alter)
70 AD 2nd Temple destroyed. Before this "Christians" thought of themselves as Jews.
Saturday Jewish Prayers from Torah. Sunday became Eucharist - Liturgy of the Word.
Entrance Procession is "Overseer" being led to home where Liturgy will be celebrated.
Priest to early Christian was Christ. Secondary Priest = Christian Community.
"Overseer" successor of Apostles. Today's Bishop.
New Structure = sacramental minister & order of service. (Priests and Deacons)
Bishop possesses "Fullness of Priesthood". PASTOR = Bishop.
3 major pieces of furniture = Alter, Lectern, Presider's Chair.
Lutherans have consubstantiation of bread and wine. (Not sacred after service.)
ONE WORD ... TWO Tables ... Lord's Body & Lord's Word. ... Chair = symbol of authority

Session TWO

Veneration of the Alter.    Priest in Person of Christ.
Mass begins with a prayer: "The Sign of the Cross". Marking ourselves as being Christian
In the Name of...... means understand Naming (in the name) gives power.
Early day symbol of Christianity was the fish. (Circle with line) (Cross came later)
"Mark those who respect the Temple with a sign on their forehead." (X = taw) - G-d = God
Sometimes a mark is a negative. Became positive in Book of Ezekiel
"His name will be on his foreheads"
Sign of Cross is sign of being Christian and a weapon against evil.
Hebrew Aleph = Truth
Revelation 22:13
I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
Lord be with you...and with your Spirit. Not just a greeting... but a prayer.
Bishop says PEACE be with you. Christ said to Apostles "Peace" be with you.
Lord is with us for strength to go forth....
"Confiteor" = I confess = I'm guilty and unworthy... Lord have mercy (Oldest Christian Prayer).
"Gloria" - = celebration of forgiveness. Penitential Rite is to make offense right.
Anxiety about life demonstrates lack of Faith in God.
Next week = finish Gloria and begin Liturgy of the word.

Session Three

Today is Trinity Sunday... Finish Introductory Rites, Gloria and "Opening Prayer" (Collect), Top 3 liturgical hymns: The Exalted (Easter only), 2 from Liturgy of the Hours = Te Deum (Oh God we Praise)-- 3 = Gloria.
To "Bless" something is to acknowledge as "Holy".
We CANNOT take God's mercy for granted.
"God of Israel" implies more than one god. Romans demanded Caesar be called "Lord". Christians could not do this as they believed only one God.
Liturgy of the Word NOT JUST WORDS but Revelation Of God: 1st reading, Psalm, 2nd reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homely, Creed, Prayer of the Faithful (Universal Prayer)
Scripture is "Inspired" = Inspires is what the author intended to say .God inspires the author with a thought. Limitations of an author and language causes a problem. Scripture study must involve study of author's time and culture.
"Deposit of Faith" Bible is complete = two sources 1,Bible (Cannot of Scripture) 2. Magisterium  (Tradition).
Bible is public revelation. Apostolic Tradition = Handing on down from Jesus to Apostles to Faithful. Private revelation other readings.
1st reading usually Old Testament (Provides unveiling of Truth). 40 years in desert represents leaving the slavery of sin and going towards salvation from forgiveness. Word of Lord.... (see Homily)
Salvation History = Two sided: 1. God reaching out.... 2. how we respond.
Responsorial Psalm = psalm responds to 1st reading. See how Psalm responds to 1st reading.

Session Four

Session Four: Feast of Corpus Christi. Cont. Liturgy of word. Old Testament accommodated the hardness of your hearts... New Testament say what was always was. A better (correct) way to respond to God. Psalm - "Praises". We acclaim this response.
Most Psalms come from liturgical services.
Author of Psalms = 1/2 (73) = David (House of David) (see handout) Handed down from different lineage. 34 Psalms of unknown origin. Research of 1800s.
150 Psalms model two things (foundation for) 1.liturgy of the hours (Prayer of the Church) 2. Rosary (Poor man's "Psalter" (book of psalms)) Poor man's Psalms.
Don't read the psalms... let the psalms read you.
6 types of psalms: praise, thanksgiving, individual laments, community laments, Royal Psalms, Wisdom Psalms
Many come from Temple readings.
Structure: address to God, list of praises, complaint or lament to God, Confession of Trust that God has heard, Statement of Faith - certainty, Praise.
Psalms divided into 5 books (like Torah's 5 books of Moses)
penitential psalms,
2nd reading = mirrored early synagogue... instructional (catechetical) - not related to 1st reading,
Gospel (4 apostles) special attention like reading from Torah (in Arc of Covenant with candle next to it).
The link = 1st reading and Gospel is the Gospel Acclamation. (Alleluia is sung not spoken) Cleanse my mind, lips and heart.
Homily explains the Gospel to our lives.
Authority of Homily from Bishop. Only Clergy gives Homily. (Authority of Apostolic succession.)
Profession of Faith // Nicene (Constantinople) Creed 381 AD (Summary of Beliefs)
Worked on agreement and wrote it down 77 AD to 787 AD = Council of Nicea.

Made Pope Bishop of Rome..... infallible
Vatican Council 2 closed Vatican 1 looked at bishops for their structual
change.
"Acolytes" are extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion.
Deacons are ordinary ministers of Communion
We have readers not lectures at small parishes.
Constitution of Sacred Liturgy.
Christ is always present in church.: especially in liturgical celebration,
in sacrifice of the Mass In priest and Eucharist, in sacraments, in his Word,
When church prays or sings -- where two have gathered---
Being late for Mass = (Scriptures equal to Body of Lord.)
We do not process out because we take the proclamation with us. It is the
PROCLAMATION of the Lord.
Not the word of the Lord... It's a book. Should say Proclamation of the word.
3 places of Jewish worship: sacrificial cult in temple, services in synogog,
private devotions
Radical changes after Romans destroyed 2nd Temple. No Temple no need for
priests. Started to re-write institutions.
Synagogue most influenced Christian worship. Memories and written record. Temple had Arc of Covenant. - From Book of Hebrews. (Idealized memories.)
Temple priest was unpopular elite. Synagogue were every day folks.
Churches call synagogues until 318 AD. Beginning of noticeable bad feelings.

Session Six

Session 6
Agree to 7th week of lesson series.
Diaspora really lesson that this is not our home. We are traveling through. Jews scattered after destruction of Temple, but many examples is history. Adam & Eve etc.

Christian prayer structure comes from Jewish prayer structure.
Synagogue had three mandatory times for services - Daniel Psalm 55. Psalm 119 calls for 7 times a day for prayer. - started with Monks.

3 categories of prayer Praise and Exaltation - Prayers of Thanksgiving - Prayers of supplication (ask for things).
Jews did not have strict structure in prayers,
Kneeling prayers, Standing prayers,
Worshiper could add private (petition) prayers, but not on Sabbath.
Caddish prayer = thanksgiving for all even in death of loved one.
